Viral music video laments lowered LDS missionary age

LOGAN, Utah – A band of students from Utah State University are making waves online with their YouTube video lamenting the lower age requirements for LDS missions.

Thomas S. Monson, President of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, made history when he announced a change in the missionary eligibility age. Young men can now go on missions at 18, and young women can go at 19.

Now Alone N’ Single, a band made up of Utah State students, have made a viral video called “She’s Going on a Mission.”

Frances Monson, wife of LDS President Thomas S. Monson, dies at 85

SALT LAKE CITY — Frances B. Monson, wife of Thomas S. Monson, President of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, died Friday morning in a Salt Lake City hospital.

Monson had been hospitalized for several weeks and died at 6:35 a.m. from causes related to her age, the LDS church said in a statement.

Francis was married to Thomas S. Monson for 64 years.

“She was committed to doing those things that would help the family, support the family, strengthen the family, and at the same time be a companion to her husband,” said Heidi Swinton, author of Thomas S. Monson’s biography.

Funeral arrangements are pending.

Cache County to adopt emission testing standards

CACHE COUNTY, Utah – Cache County will soon adopt new emission testing standards for vehicles as part of a push to clean up the area’s air quality.

The measure was passed on a 5-2 vote by the Cache County Council, and the change is expected reduce pollutants in the air by between 3 and 5 percent.

Cache County has seen some of the worst air pollution in the state in recent years. The emissions testing program is expected to be in place by the end of the year.

Report: Former Logan Regional ER tech pleads guilty to forcible sodomy

LOGAN, Utah — A former emergency room technician pleaded guilty to forcible sodomy Tuesday in connection with an alleged incident at Logan Regional Hospital, according to a report from the Herald Journal.

Hal. L Weston was arrested in January 2012 after a law enforcement officer saw him sexually assaulting an unconscious patient, the report said.

$1,000 reward offered in Box Elder Co. arson investigation

BOX ELDER COUNTY, Utah — A $1,000 reward is being offered for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person or people responsible for starting a series of fires that caused property damage in Box Elder County.

Tremonton police said the first fire caused damage to a high school football shed. A second fire caused $3,000 in damage to a vehicle. A third fire damaged a Jeep and a fourth fire damaged a camp trailer.

Two of the fires occurred in Tremonton and two occurred in Garland, police said.

Police believe the same person or people are responsible for starting all four fires.

Preparations underway for wildfire season

SALT LAKE CITY – Fire officials expect a busy wildfire season this year and are already making preparations for it.

Last year, the Dump Fire burned 5,507 acres near Eagle Mountain, forcing several hundred people to evacuate from their homes.

The Dump Fire was just one of the hundreds of wildfires that burned over 500,000 acres in Utah during 2012.

As of January 1st, Unified Fire Authority, which serves much of Salt Lake County, expanded its coverage area to include Eagle Mountain.

“All of our firefighters on the department are what we call ‘red card certified’ or they’re trained to fight wildfires and urban interface fires,” said Unified Fire Authority Capt. Clint Mecham. “So, we bring that level of training and that level of expertise and equipment to the table, as well as our specialized wildland firefighting teams that we have in place during the fire season.”

Police break up altercation between rival motorcycle gangs in Roy

ROY, Utah – Several viewers called Fox 13 to report that multiple police agencies swarmed an area in Roy after a conflict involving motorcycle gangs erupted.

Viewers reported that roads in the area near 5600 South and 1900 West were closed temporarily on Saturday afternoon as police responded to the incident.

Police said members of a motorcycle gang where having a funeral procession when members of a rival gang got involved.

Chief Greg Winham, Roy City Police Department, said the fights broke out in several places.

“It was dynamic,” he said. “It started in one business then moved to another. And when everyone left the mortuary where the funeral services were happening, the main thrust of the disturbance and the altercations took place in the middle of the intersection and parking lot at 5600 south and 1900 west.”
